Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall (R., Manassas) has joined U.S. Border Control’s Amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to rule in favor of Arizona state laws established to end illegal immigration, asserting that states have the “constitutional power to engage in war against an actual invasion.” The brief, filed with the Supreme Court on Feb. 13, contends that Arizona, “as a sovereign and independent state, has the inherent power to regulate immigration into its own territory,’ and, further, that the state’s law directed at illegal immigrants is “a constitutional exercise of Arizona’s inherent power [of self-preservation] retained by Article I,
Read more

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Feb., 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – After decades of suffering under the burden of unfunded federal mandates that require states to pick up the cost of illegal immigration, many state governments are fighting back. Since the Reagan Administration, the federal government has done nothing of substance to stem the tide of illegal aliens entering our country. In response to rising crime rates, identity theft, voter fraud and other problems caused by illegal immigrants, a number of state legislatures have passed laws cracking down on illegal aliens and the employers who hire them. Instead of applauding these actions, the Obama Administration
Read more

A nonprofit group, calling itself the U.S. Human Rights Network is moving its biannual conference out of Georgia following the passage of House Bill 87, Georgia’s anti-illegal immigration legislation. Founded by leftist organizations including the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International USA, and the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Network claimed it had planned on hosting its conference in Atlanta, bringing around 600 visitors to the area in December. The Network plans to continue boycotting Georgia (although, it appears they’ll still be headquartered there) until the legislation is tossed out. Parrott and his team set up www.mdpetitions.com, where petition supporters can print out copies and read instructions on how to collect signatures. The goal is to get enough signatures from registered voters to put the tuition measure on the 2012 general election ballot for voters to decide. Arizona state politicians have introducd model legislation this week to encourage states to prevent children of illegal immigrants from being granted citizenship under the 14th Amendment. Lawmakers in at least 14 states have said they are committed to passing the legislation targeting birthright citizenship. Arizona’s anti-illegal-immigrant bill, SB-1070, was also based on model legislation that could be easily copied by states, and at least seven states are likely to pass bills similar to the first Arizona immigration overhaul this year, according to one analysis by an immigrants rights group. One of the first priorities for Governor-elect Susana Martinez is to revoke the thousands of drivers’ licenses which have been issued by New Mexico to illegal aliens in recent years. After Arizona passed SB1070, illegal aliens have been flocking to New Mexico which does not currently require proof of citizenship to obtain a license. Outgoing open-borders advocate, Gov. Bill Richardson, made it worse by passing a law banning DMV clerks from asking an applicant if they are in the country legally. As a result, New Mexico had become a favorite with human smugglers and those who make their living from selling fraudulent
Read more

On track with 2011 predictions, the New York Times notes that as the federal government continues to totally fail in dealing with the illegal immigration problems, states are jumping in and standing up for themselves. Legislative leaders in at least half a dozen states say they will propose bills similar to a controversial law to fight illegal immigration that was adopted by Arizona last spring, even though a federal court has suspended central provisions of that statute. Ironically, the central argument the federal government leans on is that they pre-empt states from enforcing immigration laws. Local, state police agencies seek immigration power Maricopa County Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio created a special unit to enforce an Arizona law that made immigrant smuggling a state crime, sent a 250-member posse into the desert to search for human smugglers and sought a legal opinion allowing him to arrest not only smugglers but also their customers. He wants the deputies to be able to make immigration arrests when they come across suspected illegal immigrants in traffic stops and other police calls. He is among a rising number of local police seeking that power. While state and local law enforcement
Read more

New Tactic to Crack Down on Employers Hiring Illegals The war employers hiring illegals, at least in one local county, just adopted a new tactic should give employers some second thoughts. Over in Butler County, Sheriff Richard Jones has taken an interesting step in his effort to get control over what he believes to be a significant issue in his community. His new “secret weapon” is someone we will call “Jose”. A few weeks ago, retiring after nearly thirty years with border patrol and immigration, “Jose” began a new job with the Butler County Sheriff’s Department — as an undercover
Read more

Tennessee Sheriff Wants Immigration DataLocal jail problem is an indictment of federal immigration system Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall wants to do something about illegal immigrants who commit crimes. The sheriff isn’t talking about rounding up brown-skinned folks and asking for proof of citizenship. He’s not talking about subjecting Hispanics to a different arrest process. He merely seeks tools that would allow Davidson County to do a job that could be done by the federal government. The members of Tennessee’s congressional delegation should wholeheartedly support Hall’s efforts and use them as a catalyst for fixing one piece of a federal immigration system that
Read more

Prescott (AZ) City Council Council Addresses Illegal Immigration ProblemsIn the wake of the overwhelming approval of several state immigration-related propositions earlier this month, the City of Prescott will weigh in on the issue this week. At its regular study session, the Prescott City Council will consider a resolution that urges the federal government to “move expeditiously to seal our borders against this flood of illegal immigrants, criminals and terrorists, and to employ all practical and legal measures required to achieve this end.”The three-page resolution lists more than a dozen reasons for the action, including:• “Whereas, in the last 10 or
Read more

Immigration Tops Texas Lawmakers’ AgendasTexas lawmakers are ready to pounce on the illegal immigrant issue when they start their next session in January. With the Democrats in charge in Washington, conservatives in Texas plan to put their imprint on a variety of issues ranging from abortion to school vouchers.Their biggest push by far, however, will be passage of a host of bills dealing with illegal immigrants, including one that just might challenge the 14th Amendment, which defines citizenship and requires states to provide civil rights to anyone born on U.S. soil.In Austin, Republicans began are heading to the state Capitol with
Read more
