Presidential candidate Ron Paul on immigration October 9, 2007 "Our borders have been totally neglected, we worry more about the borders between North and South Korea and between Iraq and Syria than we do about our own." - Ron Paul In essence, to not enforce existing immigration laws and deport those already present illegally can only serve to encourage further illegal immigration. While the prospect of locating and deporting each person present illegally would appear a daunting task, sincere and vigorous enforcement of related laws would likely prompt many present illegally to depart of their own accord, facilitating the process. Subsequent compliance with streamlined immigration procedures, not illegal circumvention of those procedures, should be encouraged. It's crucial to eliminate automatic "birthright citizenship" to the children of non-citizens, as the current circumstance creates a tremendous incentive for ongoing illegal immigration. Here is one historical posting in which Ron Paul addressed immigration issues back in 2005: "First we need better enforcement of the laws we've got-- which plainly call for illegal immigrants to be arrested and deported and for our borders to be secured. These things are already law, but the executive branch has failed to enforce them for decades. |
