Chairman's Report, Misdirected Anger
The immigration crisis is creating a lot of anger and frustration among the millions of Americans who are suffering the effects of America's outrageous immigration policies. Unfortunately, most of the anger and frustration is being misdirected against immigrants. Misdirected because immigrants, legal or otherwise, do not establish immigration policy -- our federal government is solely responsible.
And to be very fair, the blame for our immigration crisis crosses all traditional political boundaries. Republican Presidents Bush and Reagan managed to look the other way when the big growers in the South and in California wanted illegal aliens to work on their farms, while then-Senator Bob Dole and Speaker Newt Gingrich championed NAFTA and gave President Clinton a free ride in terms of illegal immigration, the war on drugs and other border issues.
At the same time, the Democrats who, during the decades when they controlled Congress, did everything in their power to grant voting rights and amnesty to illegal aliens in the hope that these new voters would show their appreciation by reelecting them .
It is difficult to imagine how elected representatives of the people could put the interests of their constituents aside to give billions of dollars in benefits to illegal immigrants. Yet, right now, our Congress continues to all sorts of welfare benefits to illegal aliens while older Americans are undernourished and lacking adequate health care.
Yes! Americans, many of whom risked life and limb defending this country, have every right to feel angry, frustrated and outraged. But they should not vent that outrage at America's immigrants, the vast majority of whom are just as upset with these immigration policies as any other American citizen. Nor, can they blame even the illegals for wanting to improve their lot in life
The real culprits in this affair are our elected officials and the special interests who profit from the presence of illegal aliens in our country. That is why each of us should let our elected representatives and the President know we have grown impatient with their incompetence and cheap theatrics. I believe the entire immigration crisis can be resolved in a matter of months -- if -- we can convince our leaders that to do otherwise could cost them their jobs.
And that is why your letters, postcards, Telegrams and phone calls are so important to our lobbying efforts. Thanks to your letters, postcards and petitions, our efforts are starting to yield results. During the next few months, I look forward to informing you that we have made real progress in reforming our nation's border and immigration policies. Stay with us as we turn the heat up on those who profit from illegal immigration.
