Chairman's Report, "On Legal Immigration"

There is no question that illegal immigration is quite harmful to America and it must end soon if we wish to preserve the special character of our unique "melting pot" that has kept all races, colors and national origins united.

But what about legal immigration. Should we, as some suggest, ban legal immigration as well, given the recession, the deficit and all of our other problems?

Every time I hear discussions about stopping legal immigration, I find new arguments why we should think twice about proposals to place a ban on all immigration.

Recently, I spoke with a fellow whose family had escaped from Castro's Cuba many years ago. I asked him for his views on illegal immigration. He told me that he felt illegal immigration was very bad and that it imposed a terrible burden on the economy.

He also told me that he felt legal immigration must also be regulated and limited by our economy's ability to accept new people. In times of prosperity, we could afford to accept more people and in times of recession, we should limit immigration. Then he told me that America's illegal immigration problem was just one more symptom of a political system that is slowly being taken over by men and women of low character who lack both the ability and the desire to solve America's problems.

He said this is exactly what happened in Cuba. Politics became so dirty and so corrupt that honest men and women refused to participate in the political process or run for office. And in the vacuum, dangerous people like Fidel Castro were able to steal the country.

He told me that good and honest people have to overcome their reluctance and get involved in politics to safeguard our precious liberties -- or America one day could suffer the same fate as Cuba. Most younger Americans haven't suffered or seen the suffering this gentleman had witnessed first hand. That's why this immigrant's viewpoint needs to be heard and it is why I believe immigrants have an important role in helping this country protect and defend the liberties too many of us now take for granted.

America must have a steady flow of legal immigrants who cherish freedom with the same spirit as our Founding fathers and who value the opportunity to become Americans.
